Russia, and every republic of the Soviet Union
Russian is the language of documents from the Russian Federation, and of most civil records issued anywhere in the Soviet Union before 1991 — Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Moldova, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and the Baltic states. Many of those were printed as bilingual forms, Russian next to the republic's language, and both halves are translated.
A Russian or Soviet birth certificate (свидетельство о рождении) is issued by the civil registry office, the ZAGS. A certificate reissued later is marked повторное ("repeat") and carries the date of the reissue as well as the original registration; we translate both dates, because an officer comparing them needs to see which is which. The patronymic, and three spellings of one name
Every Russian name has three parts: given name, patronymic (derived from the father's given name: Ivanovich, Ivanovna) and surname, which also changes ending for women (Ivanov, Ivanova). US forms have no field for a patronymic, so it often lands in "middle name". The translation reproduces all three exactly and in the original order, so nothing is lost before the form is filled in.
Transliteration is the other trap. Since 2014 Russian passports use the ICAO system, which gives Iuliia where an older passport said Yulia and a US visa may say Julia. We follow the spelling in your current passport, or the one you tell us when you order, and use it consistently across every document in the file.
School certificates, diplomas and police records
Secondary school ends with an аттестат; a university degree is a диплом with a separate приложение (supplement) listing every course, hours and grade on the five-point scale, 5 being "excellent". The supplement is the part a credential evaluator reads, so it is translated in full rather than summarized.
A Russian police certificate (справка о наличии (отсутствии) судимости) is issued by the Ministry of Internal Affairs; the translation keeps its number, the database it was checked against and its date, which is what decides whether it is recent enough.

Is a certified Russian translation accepted by USCIS?
Yes. USCIS asks for a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)); every translation carries that signed certification, and acceptance is guaranteed or your money back.
Where does my patronymic go?
