No legal separation, and divorce at a counter
Russian law provides no legal separation. Where there are no minor children and both spouses agree, divorce is registered administratively at the ZAGS after a one-month waiting period, with no court involved.
So a Russian client has no separation papers and may have no court judgment either. The ZAGS certificate of divorce, on a numbered security form, is the evidence.
When a court is required
A court is required where there are minor children, where one spouse refuses, or where property is disputed, and the judgment must then be registered with the ZAGS before the divorce is recorded.
So a Russian file may contain a judgment and a separate ZAGS certificate, and the certificate is what evidences the registered status. Applicants frequently send only one.
The security form, and the series
Russian civil status certificates are printed on numbered security forms with a series in Cyrillic letters and a number, and those are how the document is verified.

Surnames after divorce, and the patronymic
A spouse may keep the married surname or revert to the pre-marriage one, and the choice is recorded in the divorce entry. So a woman's documents before and after may show different surnames with the divorce certificate as the link.
