Greece has separation, and it is rarely used
Greek law provides for separation from bed and board (διάσταση as a factual state and a judicial separation as an institution), but in practice it is little used because divorce has been readily available since the 1980s.
What matters far more in a Greek file is διάσταση — living apart — because a period of it is the ground for divorce and the date it began is consequential.
The two-year rule, and the consensual route
A Greek divorce may be obtained after a period of separation in fact, and Greece also permits consensual divorce before a notary since 2017, with lawyers for both parties and no judge at all.
A notarial divorce deed is a public instrument with full effect and it looks nothing like a court judgment. We name the instrument and the notary.
The religious dissolution, alongside
A couple married in an Orthodox religious ceremony requires an ecclesiastical dissolution from the diocese in addition to the civil divorce for the religious marriage to be dissolved.
So a Greek file may hold a civil decree and a separate church document. They do different things and we name each.
The ληξιαρχική πράξη, and the annotation
The dissolution is recorded against the ληξιαρχική πράξη γάμου, the marriage registration act held by the municipality, and a certificate issued afterwards carries the annotation.
That annotated certificate is what a foreign office should be sent. Greek names romanise several ways, and a spelling difference against a passport is usually not a discrepancy. See our Greek page.
