When a passport needs translating
Many passports already print the key fields in English, so a translation is not always required. It becomes necessary when the biographic page is only in another language or script, and when the entry and exit stamps, visas or observations pages matter to your case.
The stamps can matter more than the photo page
In immigration cases the officer may be interested in travel history: when you entered, when you left, and under what status. Those facts live in the stamps and visa pages. If they are in another language, they need translating too.
The observations or endorsements pages matter for the same reason. An Indian passport carries its ECR or ECNR endorsement and any name-change note there rather than on the bio page; other countries print spouse details, previous names or restrictions in the same place. Those entries are frequently the substance of what an office asked for.
One passport, two spellings of your name
Passports routinely carry a name twice in forms that do not match, and each pattern is a documented convention rather than an error — but a US system reading one field can reject a record built from the other.
A German passport expands umlauts in the machine-readable zone, so Müller appears as MUELLER two lines below Müller. A Chinese passport prints the name in characters and in pinyin, while family documents may use an older Wade-Giles or dialect spelling that matches neither. A Mexican or Colombian passport carries two surnames that US systems frequently split at the wrong place. A Russian travel passport carries a Latin transliteration that commonly differs from older Russian documents, and is a separate document from the internal passport used as domestic identification.
