The last page is the one people forget
An Indian passport carries a back page with the holder's address, the names of the father, mother and spouse, and the file number. Many offices require it, and most scans sent to us contain only the biodata page.
For an immigration or family matter those parental names are frequently the point — they are the link between the passport and a birth certificate. Send both pages, or the translation will be missing what the reader came for.
ECR and ECNR
Indian passports are endorsed ECR — Emigration Check Required — or carry no endorsement, meaning ECNR. ECR status restricts emigration for employment to certain countries without clearance and is tied to educational qualification.
It is printed on the passport and it says something about the holder's recorded schooling. A US reader who does not know what ECR means skips the most India-specific field on the document. We translate it and say what it is.
Place of birth, and the observations page
Indian passports carry an observations page with endorsements — a change of name, a change of address, a correction to a date of birth, the spouse's name added after marriage — each stamped and signed by a passport office.
Those endorsements are the record of every change and they are frequently the only documentary evidence of it. We translate each with its office and date rather than describing the page as endorsed.
