The prórroga sticker, and why it matters
Venezuela extended the validity of its passports by five years beyond the printed expiry by decree, evidenced by a prórroga sticker affixed to a page, and the United States has recognised Venezuelan passports and extensions as valid for entry beyond the printed date.
So a Venezuelan passport showing an expired date on the biodata page may be valid. The sticker is the operative document and it is on a different page. We translate it in full, including its own number and dates.
SAIME, and documents obtained abroad
Passports are issued by SAIME, and with very large emigration a great many are issued or renewed at consulates abroad, with long delays widely reported. A Venezuelan passport issued in Madrid or Bogotá is a Venezuelan passport.
We name the issuing office exactly as printed, including the consulate, because a reader expecting a Caracas issue will otherwise question a valid document.
The cédula, and what the passport does not show
The passport shows the cédula de identidad number, which stays with the person for life. That number is the link to Venezuelan civil registry records and is the most useful identifier in a Venezuelan packet.
The passport does not show parents' names, so for a family relationship you need the acta de nacimiento alongside it. We translate both consistently where you send them together.
Two surnames, and the apostille
Venezuelans carry paternal then maternal surnames, and a US system indexing the last word indexes the mother's name. We keep both and make the order explicit.
