Religious and civil marriages, both registered
Greece recognises both religious and civil marriage, and either is registered with the lixiarcheio, the registry office of the municipality, which issues the ληξιαρχική πράξη γάμου — the marriage registration act. A church document on its own is not the civil record.
Greece also keeps a separate municipal roll (dimotologio) recording family membership, and a certificate from it is a different document that offices sometimes ask for instead. Ask which — see our Greek birth certificate page.
Transliteration, and gendered surnames
Greek transliterates several ways and the official system does not always match a passport or a spelling a family has used abroad for generations. We follow the passport and note genuine differences rather than standardising.
Greek surnames are gendered, so a wife's form differs from her husband's — Papadopoulos and Papadopoulou are one family name. That reads as a mismatch on a US form and is not one. See our Greek page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
