Consensual divorce left the courts in 2017
Greece moved consensual divorce out of the court system with Law 4509/2017. A consensual divorce is now concluded before a notary, with a lawyer for each spouse, after a short mandatory waiting period. There is no hearing, no judge and no judgment.
So a Greek divorce document may be a notarial deed rather than a court decision, and an office expecting a decree will need that explained. Contested divorces still go through the courts and produce a judgment. We translate either and name it for what it is.
The registry entry, and gendered surnames
Whichever route, the divorce is recorded with the lixiarcheio, the registry office of the municipality, against the marriage act. A current registry extract showing the entry is frequently what an office actually wants alongside the deed or judgment.

What USCIS requires
