Sri Lanka issues its records in Sinhala or Tamil

Sri Lanka has two official languages, Sinhala and Tamil, with English as the link language. A birth, marriage or death certificate is written in the language of the area where it was registered: Sinhala in most of the country, Tamil in the north and east. Many older certificates are handwritten in the registrar's book and issued as certified copies. We translate handwritten certificates and say where a word cannot be read.

Sinhala has its own rounded script, unrelated to the Latin or Tamil alphabets. Tamil-language certificates are covered by our Tamil page.

Long names, and the ge name

Many Sinhala names begin with an ancestral ge name (vasagama) — Herath Mudiyanselage, Wickramasinghe Arachchige — followed by given names and a surname. A certificate gives the full name; a passport or a US form often shortens it. We reproduce the name in full as the certificate writes it.

The National Identity Card number encodes the birth year and the day of the year, adding 500 for women: the old number is nine digits and a letter (V or X), the new one, issued since 2016, twelve digits. We copy it exactly.

Documents from Sri Lanka

Birth, marriage and death certificates from the Registrar General's Department, NICs and passports, school examination certificates (G.C.E. Ordinary and Advanced Level, often already in English), university degree certificates and transcripts, and police clearance reports. Documents for use abroad are usually authenticated by the Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

If your document is already in English, it needs no translation. Ask the receiving office what it wants before paying for one.

Documents from Sri Lanka

Each of these pages describes the document as Sri Lanka issues it — the authority, the format, the annotations and what offices in the United States ask for: Birth Certificate · Marriage Certificate · Divorce Certificate · Criminal Record Certificate · Academic Transcript · High School Diploma · University Diploma · Articles of Incorporation · Bank Statement · Death Certificate · Disability Certificate · Driver's License · Expert Report · Lease Agreement · Legal Separation · Medical Records · Name Change Document · Identity Card · Passport · Paternity Acknowledgment · Power of Attorney · Property Deed · Vehicle Title.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Is a certified Sinhala translation accepted by USCIS?

Yes. USCIS asks for a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)); every translation carries that signed certification, and acceptance is guaranteed or your money back.

My birth certificate is handwritten.

That is common for older Sri Lankan certificates. We translate it and mark any word that cannot be read with certainty.

The name on my certificate is much longer than on my passport.

Normal: the certificate gives the ge name and all given names. The translation keeps it in full.

My certificate is in Tamil.

Certificates from the north and east are often in Tamil, which we translate too. Order Tamil.

How much does Sinhala to English translation cost?

$24.95 per page with no word cap, the same as every other language, with the signed certification, the translation of every stamp and seal, and formatting included. Most certificates are one or two pages.
