Three marriage laws, three certificates
Sri Lanka registers marriages under three separate laws: the general Marriage Registration Ordinance, the Kandyan Marriage and Divorce Act for Kandyan Sinhalese who choose it, and the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act of 1951. The Registrar General's Department issues General, Kandyan and Muslim marriage certificates, and the translation gives the certificate's own title, because the law under which you married also decides how a divorce is obtained.
Certified copies come from the Divisional Secretariats; marriages from 1960 onwards are in the e-BMD database and can be copied at any of them. The copy is in Sinhala or Tamil according to the registration area, and older entries are handwritten. See our Sinhala and Tamil pages.
The entry, the ceremony and the names
The entry records the parties' particulars — names, ages, residence, fathers' names and, on the general form, their civil status before the marriage — with the registrar's signature and the witnesses. Every column is translated, because a US officer reads it to confirm both parties were free to marry.
A customary or religious ceremony, such as a poruwa ceremony or a nikah, is separate from the registration, and a foreign office wants the registrar's certified copy. Names often differ from the passport because Sinhala ge names and Tamil initials are written out in full; we follow the passport and note it. If the marriage later ended, see our divorce page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
We married under Kandyan law. Does that matter?
It matters for the record: the certificate is a Kandyan marriage certificate, and a divorce under that Act goes through the District Registrar rather than the District Court. We translate the certificate's own title so the receiving office sees which law applies.
Our marriage was registered by a Muslim marriage registrar.
That certificate is issued under the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act and is translated like any other civil record. Any separate nikah document is a religious record.
Can I get a copy from abroad?
Sri Lankan missions can obtain certified copies from the e-BMD system, which covers marriages from 1960 onwards. Those copies come in the original language, so they still need translating.
