Old nine-digit numbers and new twelve-digit ones
The National Identity Card is issued by the Department for Registration of Persons and is compulsory from age 15. Cards issued before 2016 carry a nine-digit number ending in V or X: the first two digits are the year of birth and the next three the day of the year, with 500 added for women. Since 1 January 2016 new cards carry twelve digits, starting with the full four-digit year of birth, and the old number is printed on the back of the new card.
Those digits let a reader check a date of birth, so we reproduce them exactly and never adjust them. A day count of 623, for instance, is a woman born on day 123 of the year, not a typing error. See our birth certificate page.
Translating the card
Older cards were filled in in Sinhala or Tamil, and many are worn after decades of use. The name is often the full Sinhala name with its ge name, or a Tamil name with initials. Both sides are translated, including the issue date. See our Sinhala and Tamil pages.
USCIS does not require a national ID for most filings, but it often appears as supporting identity evidence, and the NIC number recurs on other Sri Lankan documents — police certificates, deeds, vehicle records. Translating the number and the name consistently across all of them saves questions later.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My NIC number ends in V.
That is the old nine-digit format, which ends in V or X. The letter is part of the number and is reproduced exactly.
My old and new NIC numbers look different.
They are meant to: the new number uses four digits for the year of birth and a longer serial. The old number is printed on the back of the new card.
Do you need both sides?
Yes. A certified translation covers the whole document, and the back of the card carries information too.
