Only the civil marriage counts

Rwandan law recognises only civil, monogamous marriage, celebrated before the civil registrar. A church wedding or the customary ceremonies on their own do not produce a marriage certificate, so the document USCIS or a court wants is the civil one, now available as an e-certificate through IremboGov.

The marriage record also states the matrimonial regime the couple chose: community of property, limited community of property, or separation of property. Since 2024 these rules sit in Law n° 71/2024 governing persons and family. We translate the regime exactly, because a court dividing property in the US may need it.

Two people, two names

A Rwandan wife usually does not take her husband's name; each spouse keeps their own Kinyarwanda and given names, often with the Kinyarwanda name first in capitals. The translation follows the certificate, and if the names in your passports are ordered differently we say so in a note.

Older certificates are in French and Kinyarwanda and newer ones often add English. See our Kinyarwanda page and, if the marriage later ended, our Rwandan divorce certificate page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

We only had a church wedding. Is the church certificate enough?

For Rwandan law, no: only the civil marriage is recognised. We translate the church certificate if you need it as supporting evidence, but ask the receiving office what it accepts.

What does 'community of property' on our certificate mean?

It is the matrimonial regime you chose at the wedding. We translate it as stated; what it means for your case is a question for a lawyer.

My wife's surname is not mine. Will USCIS question that?

Rwandan spouses keep their own names, so the documents are consistent with the custom. We can add a short note explaining it.
