There is no Sri Lankan high school diploma

Sri Lankan secondary school ends with national examinations rather than a school diploma. The G.C.E. Ordinary Level, sat at the end of grade 11, and the Advanced Level, at the end of grade 13, are set by the Department of Examinations, and their certificates are what US schools, evaluators and USCIS treat as evidence of secondary education.

Certificates are requested through the department's online certificate portal, and recent O/L certificates are being issued online. Each lists the subjects with letter grades and the candidate's index number, which we reproduce exactly. Many certificates are already in English and need no translation.

School leaving certificates and subject names

Schools themselves issue a school leaving certificate with the dates of attendance and the last grade completed. These may be in Sinhala or Tamil and are then translated in full, including the principal's stamp. See our Sinhala and Tamil pages.

Subjects such as religion, or Sinhala or Tamil as a second language, appear under their official names, and A/L subjects belong to a stream — science, commerce, arts or technology — which an evaluator reads to place you. For university records, see our transcript page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Which is my high school diploma, the O/L or the A/L?

Neither is called a diploma. Offices often want both certificates; the evaluator decides what they correspond to in the US.

My certificate is in English.

Then it may need no translation. Check for stamps or endorsements in Sinhala or Tamil.

Do I need it authenticated?

Not for USCIS or most US schools. The Consular Affairs Division authenticates O/L and A/L certificates for countries that require it.

Ready to get started?

Upload your documents and receive your certified translation, typically within 24 hours.
