Degree certificates are usually in English
Degree certificates from Sri Lankan state universities are usually in English, stating the degree, the class and the date it was conferred. A certificate wholly in English needs no translation for a US university, an evaluator or USCIS.
Where a part is in Sinhala or Tamil — a bilingual certificate, a seal, a later endorsement — that part is translated. Certificates from private institutes are read the same way. See our Sinhala and Tamil pages.
Classes, and the transcript an evaluator needs
A Sri Lankan honours degree is awarded with a class — First Class, Second Class (Upper Division), Second Class (Lower Division) — or as a pass, and general and special degrees are distinct qualifications. The class is the result an evaluator reads, so we reproduce it exactly.
Evaluators almost always want the transcript alongside the certificate — see our transcript page. The Foreign Ministry's electronic attestation system is linked to local universities, which some foreign governments require; US institutions generally verify through an evaluator instead.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Does my degree certificate need translating?
Not if it is entirely in English, which most are. Anything in Sinhala or Tamil, including a seal, does.
My degree says Second Class (Lower Division).
That is a classified honours result. We reproduce it as written and do not convert it into a GPA.
Do US universities need the Foreign Ministry attestation?
Generally not, but requirements vary. Ask the receiving institution.
Is acceptance by universities, colleges and schools guaranteed?
Yes. Our certified translations are guaranteed to be accepted by universities, colleges and schools in the United States — and by USCIS, the NVC, courts, government agencies and employers — or your money back. The guarantee covers the translation itself, not the original document or the admission decision, and it covers credential evaluation agencies such as WES and ECE as well. Full terms are in our refund policy.
