University transcripts are usually in English
Sri Lankan state universities and most degree-awarding institutes issue transcripts in English, with course codes, credits, grades and a grade point average. If the transcript is entirely in English, a US university or evaluator needs no translation of it. See our credential evaluation page.
Translation is needed where an institution issued the record in Sinhala or Tamil, or where a seal, signature block or endorsement is in one of those languages. The class of the degree — First Class, Second Class (Upper or Lower Division), Pass — is reproduced as written, not converted. See our Sinhala and Tamil pages.
G.C.E. results and the Z-score
Secondary results come from the Department of Examinations as G.C.E. Ordinary Level and Advanced Level certificates. Grades are letters: A, B, C and S (a simple pass), with W for a fail at O/L, and A/L results also give a Z-score and district and island ranks used for university admission. We keep the letters and ranks and translate the key.
The Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs authenticates O/L and A/L certificates issued from 2001 onwards online. That is for countries that require it; USCIS and US universities generally do not. See also our secondary school page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My transcript is in English. Do I need you?
Not for the transcript itself, unless a seal or endorsement is in Sinhala or Tamil. Evaluators generally accept an English-language original as it is.
What does S mean on my results?
S is a simple pass on the G.C.E. scale. We reproduce the letter and translate the key, and do not convert it to a US grade.
Can you convert my GPA?
No. A certified translation reproduces what the document says. Conversion is the job of a credential evaluator such as WES.
Is acceptance by universities, colleges and schools guaranteed?
Yes. Our certified translations are guaranteed to be accepted by universities, colleges and schools in the United States — and by USCIS, the NVC, courts, government agencies and employers — or your money back. The guarantee covers the translation itself, not the original document or the admission decision, and it covers credential evaluation agencies such as WES and ECE as well. Full terms are in our refund policy.
