Evaluation and translation are two different purchases
A credential evaluator reads your academic records and issues a report stating what your qualification corresponds to in the US system: a bachelor's degree, so many semester credits, a grade point average. A translator renders those records into English and certifies that the rendering is accurate. Neither one can do the other's job, and most evaluation agencies do not translate at all.
The order matters. The translation comes first, because it is what the evaluator reads.
The rules are set by the agency, and they genuinely differ
This is where people lose weeks. The requirements are not an industry standard — each agency publishes its own, and two of the largest contradict each other outright:
- WES requires translations that are exact and word-for-word, prepared by a professional translator, and states that it cannot accept translations completed by applicants. See our page on WES requirements.
- ECE allows applicants to prepare their own translations, provided they are complete, literal, word-for-word and in the same format as the original — and sells a translation waiver as an alternative, under which ECE translates the sealed documents itself.
- Other NACES and AICE member agencies sit somewhere between the two, and some university and licensing-board evaluation offices have rules of their own.
Check the agency, not the internet
The requirements described here were read off the agencies' own published pages in September 2026, and agencies revise them. Before you pay anyone — us included — open the requirements page for the specific agency your report is going to and read what it says today. If it tells you that you may translate your own documents, you may not need a translation service at all, and we would rather you knew that before ordering than after.
If it tells you the translation must come from a professional service, that is what we do.
What word-for-word actually means
A literal translation with the layout mirrored: every course title, every grade, every credit value, in the same order and the same table structure as the original, so an evaluator can read across from one to the other line by line. Stamps, seals, the grading key printed on the reverse and the registrar's signature block are all part of it.
Where a course title has no clean English equivalent, a literal rendering beats a plausible American-sounding one. The evaluator is matching subjects, not reading marketing copy, and an invented equivalence is the one thing that can make a whole file suspect.
The line we do not cross
We do not assign US grade point averages, credit-hour equivalents or degree equivalencies, and we do not convert a foreign grading scale into an American one. That is the evaluation. It is the agency's report to write, and a translator who produced it would be manufacturing the very conclusion you are paying the agency to reach.

Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.
A standard translation is for business or personal use where certification is not needed, such as CVs, client intake forms or marketing material, and is billed at $0.10 per word.
Frequently asked questions
Do you do the evaluation as well?
No. We translate and certify; an evaluation agency such as WES, ECE or another NACES or AICE member produces the report. They read our translation to do it.
Can I translate my own documents?
It depends entirely on the agency. ECE permits it if the translation is complete, literal and in the original format; WES states it cannot accept translations completed by applicants. Read your agency's current requirements before deciding.
Do you send the translation to the agency for me?
We deliver a PDF you upload yourself. The sealed-envelope requirement agencies impose applies to the academic records your institution sends them, not to the translation.
