What WES asks for
These are the requirements WES publishes for translations, as they stood in September 2026:
- Exact and word-for-word. All text in the original language must be accurately translated into English or French.
- Clear and legible, so that evaluators can read every translated course title and grade.
- Completed by a professional translator — WES names university translation offices, certified translation agencies and other professional translation services.
- WES states it cannot accept translations completed by applicants, handwritten translations, translations of photocopies, or incomplete translations.
- WES does not provide translation services. Obtaining the translation is the applicant's responsibility.

The requirement people trip over
Not the word-for-word rule — most professional translations already are. It is "translations of photocopies". WES wants the translation made from your official document, not from a student copy, a scan of a scan, or a photograph of a photocopy pinned to a noticeboard.
Send us the cleanest copy of the official document you have. If all you can get is poor, tell us: we will say what is legible and what is not rather than quietly guessing at a grade, because a guessed grade in an evaluation file is worse than a gap.
How it reaches WES
Translations are uploaded by the applicant from their own WES account as a PDF or JPEG, within the file-size limit WES publishes and without password protection. The sealed-envelope rule applies to the academic records your institution sends directly to WES — not to the translation.
So what we deliver is a clean PDF sized to upload. You attach it yourself, next to the document it translates.
What we translate, and what we will not
Degree certificates, diplomas, academic transcripts and mark sheets, secondary leaving certificates and the grading key printed on the reverse of any of them — literally, with the table structure preserved so the evaluator can read across.
We do not assign US credit values, grade point averages or degree equivalencies. That is precisely the report you are paying WES to produce, and it would not be worth anything if the translator had written the conclusion first.

Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.
A standard translation is for business or personal use where certification is not needed, such as CVs, client intake forms or marketing material, and is billed at $0.10 per word.

WES requires translations from a professional translation service rather than from the applicant, produced word-for-word and legibly — which describes what we deliver. WES makes its own determination on every document it receives, so we cannot promise an outcome on their behalf.
Can I translate my own documents for WES?
According to WES's published requirements, no: it states that it cannot accept translations completed by applicants. Other agencies, ECE among them, do allow it.
Does WES translate my documents for me?
