Enrolling a child who studied somewhere else
A US school district registrar deciding which grade a child enters is reading report cards, an attendance record and a list of subjects completed — documents that were never designed to be read by anyone outside the school that issued them. A boletín de calificaciones, a libreta escolar, a carnet de notes, a Philippine Form 137: all of them are school records, and all of them need to be in English.
Districts set their own enrollment checklists and they vary from one to the next. Ask the registrar what they want before you order, so you translate the documents on their list and not three others.
What a registrar is actually looking for
The translation preserves the things a placement decision turns on:
- Which grade or year the child completed, in the terms the original uses
- Subjects studied, with the marks and the scale they are on
