Translations for Foreign-Educated Health Professionals

Before a state board, most foreign-educated physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists and veterinarians go through a national credentialing body, and each has its own rule for translations: who may translate, the format, and who sends it. Each page quotes the body's own site.

Frequently asked questions

Can I translate my own documents for a US health credentialing body?

Usually not. ECFMG, NABP's FPGEC, FCCPT and NBCOT (for name documents) say applicants may not translate their own documents; TruMerit allows it only for secondary-school diplomas.

Do these bodies require an ATA-certified translator?

None of them requires ATA certification on the pages we read. The AAVSB names it as one way to qualify, alongside a Certificate of Translation Accuracy.
