Registered locally, copied by the Divisional Secretariat
Deaths are registered with the local registrar under the Births and Deaths Registration Act, and certified copies are issued through the Divisional Secretariats; deaths from 1960 onwards are in the e-BMD database. The copy is in Sinhala or Tamil depending on the registration area, and older ones are handwritten on the printed form. See our Sinhala and Tamil pages.
The entry records the date and place of death, the deceased's name, age and occupation, the cause of death and the informant. Each column is translated as the registrar wrote it, including the cause of death, which we do not reword even where it differs from a hospital's wording.
Sudden deaths and the inquirer's certificate
Accidents, suicides and other sudden deaths are referred to an Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, who holds the inquest, decides whether a post-mortem is needed and issues the cause-of-death certificate on form B18, which starts the registration. Where an estate or insurance claim turns on the cause, the receiving office may ask for that certificate as well as the registration copy.
For USCIS — a widow's petition, or proof that a former spouse has died — the certified copy of the registration entry is the document, with every stamp translated. If the death ended a marriage relevant to your case, the marriage certificate is usually needed too.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
The cause of death differs from the hospital report.
The translation reproduces what the registrar entered. A difference with a hospital record is not something a translator corrects; the entry would be amended through the Registrar General's Department.
The death was registered with a Sri Lankan mission abroad.
That registration is a Sri Lankan record too and is translated in the same way. The foreign death certificate it relied on may need its own translation.
Can I order a copy from outside Sri Lanka?
Sri Lankan missions can request certified copies from the e-BMD system for deaths from 1960 onwards. They come in the original language.
