Issued by Police Headquarters
A Sri Lankan police clearance certificate is issued by the Director, Headquarters Administration at Police Headquarters in Colombo, on the strength of a background report from the local police. Applications for visa purposes are made online, and certificates are posted only to addresses in Sri Lanka, so applicants living abroad apply through a Sri Lankan embassy or high commission.
The certificate is generally issued in English for use abroad. If yours is wholly in English, USCIS and the National Visa Center need no translation of it; check the stamps, though, because a seal or endorsement in Sinhala or Tamil still has to be translated. See our Sinhala page.
Court records alongside the certificate
A clearance certificate reports what the police hold; it is not a court record. Where a case was prosecuted, US offices often want the court's record of the outcome too, and Magistrate's Court and High Court records may be in Sinhala or Tamil. Those need full translation, including the case number and the court's seal.
The name on the certificate is checked against the NIC and passport. If the certificate gives a Sinhala ge name in full or expands Tamil initials, we keep its spelling and note the passport form. See our identity card page and our Tamil page.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
My police certificate is in English. Do I need a translation?
Usually not, as long as every part of it, stamps included, is in English. Anything in Sinhala or Tamil needs a certified translation.
I live abroad. How do I get one?
Apply through the Sri Lankan embassy or high commission where you live; the police post certificates only to addresses in Sri Lanka.
How long is the certificate valid for?
US offices set their own limits on how recent a police certificate must be. Ask the receiving office.
