Who grants a Sri Lankan divorce

Which document you hold depends on how you married. Under the general law, divorce is entirely judicial: a District Court enters a decree nisi on a fault ground — adultery, malicious desertion or incurable impotence — and makes it absolute after three months under section 605 of the Civil Procedure Code. The decree absolute is what ends the marriage, so that is the one to translate, not only the decree nisi.

Kandyan marriages are dissolved by the District Registrar after an inquiry, and the divorce certificate is issued once the 30-day appeal period has passed. Muslim marriages are dissolved by the Quazi for the area, who gives the wife a copy at the time; further copies come from the Divisional Secretariat. Each is translated with its own title. See our marriage certificate page.

The language of the record, and the date that counts

Sinhala and Tamil are the languages of the courts, so a District Court decree may be in either depending on the district, and English also appears in court records. A decree wholly in English may need no translation; one in Sinhala or Tamil, or with seals and endorsements in those languages, does. See our Sinhala and Tamil pages.

US offices look for the date the divorce became final, and on a general-law divorce that is the date the decree was made absolute, months after the nisi. We translate both dates exactly as written. If you separated by court order without divorcing, see our legal separation page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

I have a decree nisi. Is that enough?

Under the general law the marriage ends with the decree absolute, entered after the three-month waiting period. Most offices will want that one; ask the receiving office.

My divorce was granted by a Quazi.

Muslim marriages are dissolved under the Muslim Marriage and Divorce Act by the Quazi for the area. We translate the Quazi's divorce certificate like any other civil document.

My decree is in English.

Then it may need no translation. Any seal, endorsement or stamp only in Sinhala or Tamil still has to be translated.
