Registered with the Registrar General's Department
A power of attorney used in Sri Lanka must be registered with the Registrar General's Department under the Powers of Attorney Ordinance, whether it was signed in Sri Lanka or abroad. For one signed abroad the department asks for a certified copy of the grantor's passport data page, and registration has to be made within a set period of signing; check the current period with the department, as it has changed.
Notaries check the department's registers before acting on a power of attorney in a land sale, so one that is unregistered or revoked will stop the transaction. See our property deed page.
Which way the translation goes
Most Sri Lankans abroad need a power of attorney in English for use at home, and that needs no translation, though it must still meet Sri Lanka's signing and registration rules. Translation into English is needed when a Sri Lankan power of attorney, prepared by a notary in Sinhala or Tamil, has to be shown to a US court, bank or USCIS.
We translate the whole instrument: the grantor's and attorney's details with their NIC numbers, each power granted, the notary's attestation and the registration endorsement. See our Sinhala and Tamil pages.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.
Frequently asked questions
Does a POA I sign in the US need translating for Sri Lanka?
Not if it is in English. It must still meet Sri Lanka's signing and registration rules; check with the Registrar General's Department or a Sri Lankan lawyer.
My POA is in Sinhala. Who in the US needs a translation?
Any US court, bank or agency that relies on it. We translate it in full, with the attestation and the registration endorsement.
Is the registration endorsement important?
Yes. It shows the power was registered and when, it is part of the document, and it is translated.
