Procuração pública and procuração particular
Brazil distinguishes a procuração pública — drawn up by a notary at a cartório — from a procuração particular, a private document the parties write themselves with signatures recognised at a cartório.
For acts requiring a public instrument, principally property transactions above a value threshold, only the public form works. A private power presented for a property sale is refused, and we name which the document is.
Reconhecimento de firma, and what it proves
A Brazilian private document gains weight through reconhecimento de firma, the cartório's recognition of the signature, which comes in two forms: por semelhança, comparing against a filed specimen, and por autenticidade, where the signatory signs in front of the clerk.
They are not equivalent and the stamp says which. Authenticity recognition is required for several acts and a US reader cannot tell the difference without being told. We translate the stamp.
Powers granted abroad
A power granted in the United States for use in Brazil is signed before a US notary, apostilled, and then must be sworn-translated in Brazil by a tradutor público juramentado and registered at a Títulos e Documentos cartório before it is usable.
Our certified translation is what the US side needs; the Brazilian side needs a sworn translation done in Brazil. We say so plainly rather than letting a client assume one covers both.

A Brazilian attorney may delegate by substabelecimento, with or without reservation of powers, and the chain of substabelecimentos is what a registry examines.
