Procura generale and procura speciale
Italian law distinguishes a procura generale covering all acts of administration from a procura speciale granted for a named act, and the form required follows the act: a power to sell real property must be in the same form as the sale, meaning a notarial deed.

Autentica di firma, and the notary
An Italian notary may authenticate a signature (autentica di firma) on a private document or draw up the power as a public deed, and the two produce different instruments.

Italian consulates abroad exercise notarial functions, so a power granted before an Italian consul in the United States is an Italian notarial act, not a US notarisation with an apostille.
