When you need nothing from us

IELTS, TOEFL, PTE and the Cambridge exams already issue results in English, and their score reports can normally be sent electronically to the receiving institution direct from the test provider — which most universities prefer to any paper you supply.

If that is what you hold, you almost certainly do not need a translation, and we would rather tell you that than take the order. What does need translating is a national certificate issued in another language.

The CEFR level is the fact, and it should not be converted

Most European and many other certificates state a level on the Common European Framework — A1 through C2 — and that level is the finding. A reader who wants to know whether someone can follow a lecture in Spanish reads B2 or C1, not a percentage.

Some certificates state a raw score, a band or a national grade instead, and those do not map onto CEFR reliably. We reproduce what the certificate says and do not supply a CEFR equivalent the issuer did not give, because an invented equivalence in a translation is an assertion we have no basis for.

The certificates that are not CEFR at all

JLPT runs N5 to N1 with N1 the highest and does not use CEFR. HSK runs 1 to 9 under its current form and its relationship to CEFR is contested. TOPIK runs levels 1 to 6 across two test tracks. CELPIP and the Canadian benchmarks are a separate scale again.

Each of those has its own logic and its own published bands, and rendering N2 as "upper intermediate" in a translation substitutes our judgment for the issuer's. We keep the level as issued and translate the issuer's own description of it where the certificate prints one.

Validity, and what the certificate is being used for

Several certificates expire — TestDaF and many national exams are treated as current for a limited period by receiving institutions even where the certificate itself has no stated expiry, and IELTS and TOEFL formally do. A university, a licensing board and an immigration authority apply different windows to the same paper.

We translate the issue date and any validity statement prominently. Where the certificate is going to a credential evaluator alongside a diploma, tell us — we keep terminology consistent across the whole set.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is for business or personal use where certification is not needed, such as CVs, client intake forms or marketing material, and is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
