Chinese documents with Uyghur on them

Most Uyghurs' official documents were issued in China, in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, and are bilingual: Chinese with Uyghur in the Arabic script. The household register (hukou), ID cards, certificates and school records can all carry both. We translate both languages, and point out where the two halves differ.

Uyghur is written in a modified Arabic script that marks every vowel, in Cyrillic by Uyghurs in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, and informally in Latin. A translator who reads Arabic or Persian will recognise the letters but not the language. Chinese-only documents are covered by our Chinese page.

A name in three forms

A Uyghur name is a given name followed by the father's given name; there is no family name. In Chinese documents the name is transcribed into characters with a middle dot between the parts — 买买提·艾力 — and a Chinese passport then romanises those characters in pinyin (Maimaiti Aili), which is not how the name is spelled in Uyghur (Memet Eli).

One person can therefore appear three ways in one file. We follow the spelling you give us, reproduce the others as printed, and can add a translator's note that ties them together — often the single most useful line in an asylum file.

Documents in Uyghur files

Hukou booklets, ID cards, birth and marriage certificates, school and university records, police and neighbourhood committee letters, and personal and religious documents. Asylum files also hold letters and messages from family members, which we translate in full.

See our asylum translation page and our Chinese birth certificate page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

Is a certified Uyghur translation accepted by USCIS?

Yes. USCIS asks for a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate (8 CFR 103.2(b)(3)); every translation carries that signed certification, and acceptance is guaranteed or your money back.

My passport name does not look like my Uyghur name.

Chinese passports romanise the Chinese characters for the name, not the Uyghur spelling. We follow the spelling you give us and can explain the difference in a note.

My hukou is in Chinese and Uyghur.

We translate both, with every page that has an entry on it.

My documents are from Kazakhstan, in Cyrillic.

We translate Cyrillic Uyghur and the Russian or Kazakh on the same document.

How much does Uyghur to English translation cost?

$24.95 per page with no word cap, the same as every other language, with the signed certification, the translation of every stamp and seal, and formatting included. Most certificates are one or two pages.
