The father's column on the birth entry

In Sri Lanka, paternity is shown mainly through the birth registration. The father's details occupy their own column, and older forms also asked whether the parents were married. Where a father was left off at registration, his details are added afterwards by amending the entry; the Registrar General's Department handles a change to column 04, the father's details, through the Additional District Registrar at the Divisional Secretariat.

The amended certified copy, with its endorsement, is what a US office reads. We translate the endorsement and its date as well as the original entry, so the reader can see when the father was added. See our birth certificate page.

Court orders, and the new certificate

Where paternity was disputed, the evidence is a court order, often from a maintenance case in a Magistrate's Court, and it may be in Sinhala, Tamil or English. The whole order is translated, including the case number and the court's seal. See our Sinhala and Tamil pages.

The bilingual national birth certificate no longer asks whether the parents were married. If you hold both an old and a new certificate, they will differ on that point; that is a change of form, not of facts. USCIS applies its own rules on paternity and legitimation; we translate, and the receiving office decides.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where one sheet of your document is one page, with no word cap.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page with no word cap.

Frequently asked questions

My father's name was added later.

That shows as an amendment on the certified copy. We translate the original entry and the amendment with its date.

My old certificate says the parents were not married.

The older form asked that question. We translate it as written; the newer national certificate no longer includes it.

Is there a separate paternity document?

Usually the birth registration is the record. Where a court decided paternity, the court order is the document to translate.
