Many Indonesians have only one name
A single name is a complete legal name in Indonesia, and most Indonesians have no family name at all. US forms, which insist on a given name and a surname, cannot represent that — which is why immigration files routinely use FNU ("first name unknown") or LNU ("last name unknown") to fill the box the document does not answer.
We translate the name exactly as the document gives it and do not invent a surname to fill a field. Where a form has already been completed with FNU or LNU, sending it with the documents lets us keep the translation consistent with what was filed. Mononyms have not been registrable for newborns since 2022, so younger applicants increasingly have two names where their parents have one.

The birth certificate is the akta kelahiran, but the document that proves family relationships is usually the Kartu Keluarga, the family card listing every member of a household with their relationship to the head. The identity card is the KTP. Offices frequently want all three, and sending them together lets us keep one spelling per person across the set.
