Single names, and what the passport does with them

A great many Indonesians have a single legal name with no family name. International passport standards require a surname field, so Indonesian practice has variously repeated the single name in both fields, left one blank, or recorded it in the surname position.

The result is that one person's documents may show the name arranged differently, and US systems generate a mismatch out of nothing. We state that the holder has a single legal name and reproduce the arrangement the passport uses.

The NIK, and the family card

The NIK is the sixteen-digit population number encoding the region of registration, the date of birth with an offset for women, and a serial. It does not change and it is the identifier every Indonesian record uses.

The passport shows no parents. The kartu keluarga, the family card, lists the household and is the document that evidences a relationship.

The e-paspor, and validity

Indonesia extended ordinary passport validity from five to ten years for adults, so a person may hold books with different validity periods, and the electronic passport carries a chip symbol on the cover.

The type and validity are printed and we name them rather than describing every book as a passport.

Religion on other documents

The passport does not record religion, but the Indonesian KTP identity card does, from a defined list, and it appears in family and asylum files where it can be material.

We translate the field as printed without comment. See our Indonesian page.

Ordering, and what the certification covers

Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
