The akta kelahiran, from Dukcapil
An Indonesian birth certificate is the akta kelahiran, issued by the Dinas Kependudukan dan Pencatatan Sipil (Dukcapil) of the regency or city. Formats changed over the decades and older certificates look quite different from current ones; both are genuine.

One legal name, and what US forms do with it
Many Indonesians have a single legal name with no family name at all. US forms frequently cannot accept that and end up recording FNU — first name unknown — or LNU, which is a convention for a missing field rather than a statement about the person.

What USCIS requires
