The Ministry of Interior, and two calendars
Israeli births are registered with the Ministry of Interior, which issues the birth certificate (teudat leda). Certificates carry the identity number that ties the record to everything else, and it is reproduced exactly.
Israeli documents frequently carry the Hebrew calendar date alongside the Gregorian one. The Hebrew year does not line up with the Gregorian year — its new year falls in autumn — so each date is converted individually and both are shown. See our Hebrew page.
Hebrew script and transliteration
Hebrew is written right to left and without most vowels, which means a name can be transliterated several ways from the same spelling. A passport, an older document and a US record frequently disagree; we follow the passport and note a genuine difference rather than silently choosing one.
Documents sometimes carry Arabic alongside Hebrew, and both are translated.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
