The RUN is on the passport
A Chilean passport prints the RUN — the national identity number, the same number as the RUT for an individual — which stays with the person for life and is the identifier every Chilean record uses.
It is written with a check digit after a hyphen, which may be the letter K, and a transcription that drops it fails verification. We reproduce it exactly including that character.
Issued by the Registro Civil
Chilean passports are issued by the Servicio de Registro Civil e Identificación, the same body that keeps the civil register and issues the cédula de identidad. That is unusual: in most countries the passport comes from a foreign ministry or an immigration authority.
It means the passport and the birth certificate come from one body and match cleanly, and the certificado de nacimiento is the document that carries parentage and any subinscripción.
Minors need authorisation to leave
A Chilean minor travelling without both parents requires notarial authorisation from the absent parent or parents, and border officials check it. The authorisation is a separate notarial instrument.
It appears in family travel files and is not part of the passport. We translate it as the notarial deed it is, naming the notary and the repertory number.
Two surnames, and the certificate behind it
Chileans carry paternal then maternal surnames and the passport prints both. A US system indexing the last word indexes the mother's name.
