The ten-digit cédula, and what it encodes
The Ecuadorian cédula is ten digits: the first two are a province code, the third indicates the type of person, and the last is a check digit. It stays with the holder across a change of name and appears on the passport.
So the number locates the registration on its face. We reproduce it exactly including the check digit, which verification systems require.
Electronic certificates, with a verification code
Ecuadorian civil registry certificates are now issued electronically with a verification code and a QR, and the electronic issue is the normal form rather than a lesser version of a paper one.
The passport shows no parents; the electronic birth certificate does. We transcribe the verification code so the receiving office can check it online.
Minors and the exit authorisation
An Ecuadorian minor travelling without both parents requires judicial or notarial authorisation, and the requirement is enforced at the border.
The authorisation is a separate instrument naming the trip and the accompanying adult, and it appears in family travel files. We translate it as issued.
Two surnames, and the identity law
Ecuadorians carry paternal then maternal surnames and the passport prints both. The 2016 identity law permits a change of given names once administratively and allows the order of surnames to be changed in defined circumstances.
