The DPI and the CUI
The DPI is the Guatemalan identity document and the CUI the thirteen-digit unique code on it, which stays with the person across a change of name and appears on the passport.
Older documents predate the DPI and reference the cédula de vecindad, issued by a municipality with completely different numbering. Both may appear in one family file and we reproduce each as printed.
RENAP took over from the municipalities
Guatemala moved its civil registry from the municipalities to RENAP at the end of the 2000s, migrating older records. A RENAP certificate may therefore restate an entry originally made in a municipal book decades earlier.
Where the document shows both layers we translate both, because the original municipal entry is how the record is traced.
Maya surnames, and the spellings
Guatemalan names frequently include Maya surnames — K'iche', Q'eqchi', Mam, Kaqchikel — written with apostrophes and letters foreign to Spanish orthography, and registry clerks have historically hispanicised them.
So a passport and an older document may spell one surname several ways. We reproduce each exactly rather than harmonising, because the variation is itself the evidence of what happened.
Minors, and the exit requirement
A Guatemalan minor travelling without both parents requires authorisation, and Guatemala applies it strictly given regional concerns about child migration.
The authorisation is a separate notarial or judicial instrument. The passport shows no parents; the RENAP certificate does. See our Guatemalan birth certificate page.
