BPKB and STNK, and only one is ownership
Indonesia issues the BPKB (Buku Pemilik Kendaraan Bermotor), a booklet that is the ownership document, and the STNK, the annual registration slip carried in the vehicle.
Only the BPKB proves ownership, and on a financed car the lender holds it. A seller with only an STNK has not finished paying, and we say what the missing document means.
Annual and five-yearly renewals
The STNK is renewed annually with the vehicle tax, and every five years the vehicle is physically inspected and new plates are issued.
So an Indonesian file holds documents with two different cycles, and an expired five-year registration is a bigger problem than a lapsed annual one. We translate both dates.
Progressive tax, and the name on the papers
Indonesia charges progressive vehicle tax on second and subsequent vehicles registered to one name and address, which is why many cars stay registered in a previous owner's name after a sale.
That practice is widespread and it explains a mismatch between the BPKB and the person in possession. We translate the names as they stand.
The plate, and the single names
Indonesian plates carry a regional letter code — B for Jakarta, D for Bandung, L for Surabaya — which identifies where the vehicle is registered.
