An Arabic script that is not Arabic
Sorani is written in a modified Arabic alphabet in which the vowels are written out, unlike Arabic where they are usually left off. It has letters Arabic does not — ڕ, ڵ, ۆ, ێ, ە — and a translator who reads Arabic but not Sorani will misread them.
Sorani is the official variety of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, which means its documents are genuinely in Kurdish rather than Arabic: civil certificates, court decisions, KRG administrative papers, university records from Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and Duhok.
Two administrations, and the documents that come from each
Iraqi Kurdish files often hold documents from both the KRG and the federal Iraqi system, in Kurdish and Arabic respectively, sometimes recording the same fact differently. Identity numbers, spellings and even dates can diverge.
