Rial and toman are the same money

Iran's official currency is the rial, but Iranians universally quote prices in toman, which is ten rial and has no note of its own. Bank statements are in rial; conversation, shop prices and many informal documents are in toman.

So a figure on a statement is ten times the same amount quoted in toman, and a reader who does not know that is off by an order of magnitude. This is the single most important thing about reading an Iranian financial document, and we say which unit a figure is in every time.

The rate the statement does not tell you

Iran has operated an official exchange rate alongside a very different market rate, and the gap between them has been large. A rial balance converts to dollars at two completely different numbers.

We reproduce the rial figure and never convert. A conversion at the wrong rate is not a rounding error here, it is a different order of magnitude.

Solar Hijri dates, and the sheba

Statements are dated in the Solar Hijri calendar, whose year begins at the spring equinox, so 1402 spans parts of 2023 and 2024. We convert each date individually and show both.

Accounts are identified by a sheba number — the Iranian IBAN beginning IR — alongside the bank account number, and the holder by their ten-digit national code. We reproduce each as labelled.

Eastern numerals, and what we do not advise on

Iranian statements print amounts in Eastern Arabic numerals as well as Western digits in places, and we give figures in Western digits so the office can use them.
