The som, and the 2017 liberalisation
Uzbekistan liberalised its exchange rate in 2017, ending a long-standing gap between an official rate and a much weaker black market rate and devaluing the som sharply overnight.
So a som balance before and after that date converts very differently, and a statement spanning it shows an apparent change in dollar terms that reflects the reform. We reproduce the som figure and any rate the statement prints and do not convert.
Som figures are very large
Som amounts run to seven and eight digits for ordinary sums, and Uzbek numbers use a space for thousands and a comma for decimals.
A reader applying US punctuation misjudges the scale. We convert the notation, name the currency and state the order of magnitude plainly.
Two alphabets, and Russian
Uzbekistan is mid-transition from Cyrillic to the Latin alphabet, so an older statement is Cyrillic and a newer one Latin with the same holder name spelled two ways. Russian remains widely used in banking.
