Rahn — a deposit instead of rent
Iran has a housing arrangement like Korea's. Under rahn the tenant hands the landlord a very large deposit and pays little or no monthly rent, recovering the deposit at the end; rahn va ejareh mixes a smaller deposit with rent.
A US reader seeing an enormous deposit and almost no rent is looking at a tenancy, not a purchase, and the landlord's return is the use of the money. We explain the instrument.
The conversion rate between them
Iranian practice uses a customary rate for converting deposit into rent, so a landlord and tenant negotiate along a line rather than between two fixed points, and the contract states where they landed.
Both figures matter and we reproduce each with the arrangement it belongs to.
Rial, toman and the trap
Amounts on a contract are in rial while everyone quotes in toman, which is ten rial with no note behind it. A figure is therefore ten times its spoken equivalent.
That is the single most important thing about reading an Iranian financial figure, and we say which unit a figure is in every time.
