The exit permit, and conscription
An Iranian passport does not by itself allow a male citizen of conscription age to leave. Men must have completed military service, hold an exemption, or obtain an exit permit, and the status is recorded.
So an Iranian man's travel history and his passport endorsements tell a story a US reader will not read unless the endorsement is translated. We translate the service and permit entries with the rest.
The shenasnameh is the underlying record
The passport derives from the shenasnameh, the identity booklet that records births, marriages, children and death across its pages, and the national code — ten digits with a check digit — links them.
The passport does not show parents or marital status; the shenasnameh does. For any family matter, send the booklet in full rather than a single page.
Solar Hijri, and two dates
Iranian passports print dates in the Solar Hijri calendar alongside the Gregorian, and the Solar Hijri year begins at the spring equinox so it spans two Gregorian years.
We convert each date individually and show both. A date converted by subtracting a constant is wrong a substantial fraction of the time.
Transliteration, and what we do not advise on
Persian romanises several ways — Hosseini, Husseini, Hossaini — and Iranian surnames were adopted relatively recently by statute, so older family records may carry none.
We translate and certify the document. Whether you may transact with an Iranian counterparty is a sanctions question for your counsel, not something a translation resolves. See our Persian page.
Ordering, and what the certification covers
Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
Frequently asked questions
Can an Iranian man travel on his passport alone?
Not if he is of conscription age without completed service, an exemption or an exit permit. The status is recorded.
Does the passport show my parents?
No. The shenasnameh booklet does, along with marriages and children. Send it in full.
My passport shows two dates.
Solar Hijri and Gregorian. The Solar Hijri year starts at the spring equinox, so we convert each date individually.
Do you advise on sanctions?
No. We translate and certify the document; the rest is for your counsel.
