The colour of the cover means something
Turkish passports come in four colours with defined meanings: burgundy for ordinary citizens, green for civil servants above a grade and certain retirees, grey for special passports, and black for diplomatic.
A green passport carries visa-free access to countries the burgundy one does not, so the colour is a fact about the holder's position and their travel rights. We name the type as printed rather than describing every book as a passport.
The T.C. Kimlik No, on everything
The T.C. Kimlik No is eleven digits, unique for life, and appears on the passport and on every other Turkish document. It does not change with a name and it is the cross-check across the file.
The Turkish identity card is also a travel document for a defined set of countries, so a Turkish client may hold a kimlik kartı rather than a passport for some journeys.
The nüfus record is where the family is
A Turkish passport does not show parents. The nüfus kayıt örneği — the population registry record — lists the person with their parents, spouse and children, and is what a US office needs for a family relationship.
It is a separate document from MERNİS and applicants routinely do not send it. We translate both consistently where you do.
İ and ı, and the name mismatch
Turkish distinguishes dotted İ/i from dotless I/ı as separate letters, and the machine-readable zone and English-casing software both mangle them — İSMAİL becomes ISMAIL.
Where the printed page and the machine-readable line differ for that reason, we reproduce the Turkish and note the rendering. See our Turkish page.
Ordering, and what the certification covers
Upload the document, choose certified translation at $24.95 per page of up to 250 words, and it comes back typically within 24 hours as a PDF formatted to mirror the original, with a signed certificate of translation accuracy on letterhead. Marginal annotations are translated in place, in the margin, and every seal, stamp and registry endorsement is translated with the text. See how we translate and certified versus standard.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my passport green?
Green is for civil servants above a grade and certain retirees, with different visa access. The colour is a fact about the holder.
Does the passport show my parents?
No. The nüfus kayıt örneği does, and it is what a US office needs for a family relationship.
Does the T.C. number change?
No. Eleven digits, unique for life, and the cross-check across the file.
Why does the name differ between the two lines?
The machine-readable zone strips the dotted i. We reproduce the Turkish.
