The sixth preparatory certificate

Iraqi secondary school ends with the sixth preparatory year (السادس الإعدادي, grade 12) and a national ministerial exam set by the Ministry of Education. The certificate (شهادة الدراسة الإعدادية) states the branch — literary, or scientific, which in recent years has been split into biological and applied tracks — each subject's mark and the average. The third intermediate year (grade 9) also ends with a ministerial exam and certificate, but that one does not show completion of high school.

Marks are percentages with 50 the pass, and the average, any second-round (الدور الثاني) result and the branch are translated as printed. The Kurdistan Region runs its own grade 12 exams through its own Ministry of Education, and its certificates may be in Kurdish as well as Arabic; both are translated.

Stamps, names and US uses

For use abroad, Iraqi school certificates usually carry the stamp of the education directorate that issued them and often an authentication from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs; each is translated with its reference number. Many Iraqi families in the US came through refugee or SIV programs, and their teenagers enroll in US schools (see school enrollment); adults use the certificate for community college or evaluation by WES or ECE (see credential evaluation).

An Iraqi name is a chain — given name, father's, grandfather's, sometimes a family name — and the translation keeps it whole, spelled as in your passport. See the Iraqi transcript and birth certificate pages and our Arabic page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

Is my third intermediate certificate a high school diploma?

No. It ends grade 9. The sixth preparatory certificate is what shows completion of secondary school.

My certificate is from the Kurdistan Region.

It is translated like any other, Kurdish and Arabic parts included.

Do you convert my average to a GPA?

No. It stays a percentage as printed; WES or ECE does the conversion.
