Extrait or copie intégrale

In Côte d'Ivoire a birth is registered with the civil registrar (officier d'état civil) of the mairie, or of the sous-préfecture where a locality has no mairie, and it must be declared within three months. The registry issues two documents: the extrait d'acte de naissance, a short version, and the copie intégrale d'acte de naissance, the full record with the details of both parents. If the office you are dealing with wants the parents' details, the copie intégrale is the one to send. Both are in French. See our French page.

An Ivorian certificate carries a round blue seal with ETAT-CIVIL in the centre, the registrar's signature and a revenue stamp. The mairie does not certify copies: it issues a new duplicate, so the document you hold may be dated long after the birth. The translation gives both the date of birth and the date of issue, so they are not confused.

The jugement supplétif

A birth not declared in time is established by a court's jugement supplétif, usually on the testimony of witnesses who know the facts, and is then entered in the register. Many Ivorians born outside cities hold one, and the judgment is translated as what it is: the court, the date, the witnesses heard and the order to transcribe.

Names are kept in the order of the record and spelled as in your passport. See the generic birth certificate translation page.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

Extrait or copie intégrale — which should I order?

The copie intégrale is the full record with the parents' details. If the office wants proof of parentage, order that one.

My certificate was issued years after my birth.

Normal: the mairie issues new duplicates rather than certified copies. Both dates are translated.

I have a jugement supplétif.

Common in Côte d'Ivoire. We translate it as the court judgment it is.
