Three documents with the same purpose

In Guinea a birth is first declared where the child is born, and within six months the declaration is taken to the mairie or commune for the birth certificate. The registry then issues an extrait d'acte de naissance (déclarant) or an acte de naissance (copie intégrale), signed and stamped by the civil registrar (officier d'état civil or officier d'état civil délégué). Many are printed on a volet, a vertical half of an A4 sheet; others are typed or printed on A4 or A3. All are in French — see our French page.

After six months, the birth can only be registered through the court of the place of birth, which issues a jugement supplétif tenant lieu d'acte de naissance — a judgment that takes the place of the birth record — and the registry then records it as a transcription du jugement supplétif. There is no age limit, so adults often obtain one years later, and Guineans born abroad who were not registered in time use the same procedure.

Translating the judgment and the transcription

When you have both the judgment and its transcription, each is translated as the document it is: the court, the date of the hearing, the witnesses and the order on one; the registry number and date of transcription on the other. The dates differ, and the translation keeps them distinct, because the date of birth and the date of registration are often decades apart.

Tell us the document is from Guinea (Conakry): Guinea-Bissau writes in Portuguese and Equatorial Guinea mostly in Spanish, and the translation should name the issuing country correctly. For a refugee or asylum case, see asylum translations.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My birth certificate is a jugement supplétif.

Common in Guinea, and it takes the place of the birth record. We translate it as the court judgment it is.

I have the judgment and a transcription.

We translate both, keeping the hearing, transcription and birth dates distinct.

My certificate is a narrow half-page.

That is the volet format many Guinean registries use. It is translated in full, stamps included.
