Wathikat welada and the civil registration extract
A Lebanese birth certificate (وثيقة ولادة, wathikat welada) is issued by the district office of the Civil Registry (Vital Statistics Bureau), under the Directorate General of Civil Status of the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities, in the district where the person is registered — which for many families is the family's home town, not where the person was born or lives. Abroad, it is requested through a Lebanese embassy. It is a table of personal details with Ministry of Interior stamps, in Arabic. See our Arabic page; if anything on yours is in French, that is translated too, at the same price.
The other common document is the civil registration extract (إخراج قيد), individual (فردي) or for the whole family (عائلي), which lists everyone in the family entry with its register number. The State Department accepts it as an alternate proof of birth for people born in Lebanon. If the birth was never registered, or the record was lost during the civil war, the registry issues a statement of non-existence, which is translated as such.
Sect, religious marriage and the register number
Lebanese personal status is organized by religious community, and civil registration records show the person's sect (المذهب); since a 2009 Ministry of Interior circular a person can have it removed, and the field then shows a slash. Whatever is in the field is translated as it stands. To register a birth, parents present their marriage certificate as executed by the civil registry — and since only religious marriages are performed in Lebanon, that is a religious marriage registered civilly.
The register number (رقم السجل) and place of registration tie a family's documents together and are reproduced exactly. Names follow the chain of given name, father's name and family name; the translation follows your passport's spelling. For visa cases, see what the NVC asks for.
What USCIS requires
Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.
State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.
How it works
Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.
A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.
Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.
Certified vs. standard translation
A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.
A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
Frequently asked questions
Birth certificate or ikhraj qaid?
Both come from the Civil Registry. The State Department accepts the individual or family extract as an alternate for people born in Lebanon; check with the office handling your case. We translate either.
My extract shows my religion or sect.
It is part of the record and is translated as it stands, or as a slash if it was removed.
My birth was never registered.
The registry can issue a statement of non-existence, which is translated like any other civil document.
