The Civil Status and Passports Department certificate

A Jordanian birth certificate (شهادة ولادة, shihadat wiladah) is issued by the Civil Status and Passports Department (دائرة الأحوال المدنية والجوازات) for every birth in Jordan, whatever the parents' nationality. The current certificate is a cream sheet with a light red and blue pattern, a watermark, the department's stamp in the lower right corner and a signature. Births are registered on the hospital's birth notification, together with the family book (دفتر العائلة) when the father is Jordanian, or the parents' passports when he is not.

Jordanian citizens' documents carry the 10-digit national number (الرقم الوطني); non-Jordanians' carry a document number instead. Either is reproduced exactly, since it links the certificate to the family book and the ID card. See our Arabic page.

Old versions, the family book and names

The State Department notes that old-format Jordanian birth certificates are not accepted for visas unless accompanied by the new version, so if yours is an old one, get a current certificate before paying for a translation. The family book, which lists the head of the family, the spouse and the children, is often asked for as proof of the relationship and is translated page by page.

Names are given as a chain — given name, father's, grandfather's and family name — and the translation keeps that order and follows your passport's spelling. If any part of your certificate is already printed in English, only the Arabic needs translating, and we will tell you before you pay for the rest. For visa cases, see what the NVC asks for.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My certificate is an old version.

For visas the State Department wants the new version with it. Get a current one first; we translate either.

Do I need to translate the family book?

If the office asks for proof of the family, often yes. We translate it like any other document.

What is the national number?

The 10-digit number of a Jordanian citizen, which links all their civil documents. It is reproduced exactly.
