The extrait from the citizens' centre, in French and Arabic

A Mauritanian birth certificate (extrait d'acte de naissance) is issued by a Centre d'accueil des citoyens, the enrolment centres of the national population registry agency, and since the 2011 civil status law and re-enrolment every record is tied to the person's national identification number (NNI), which appears on the certificate. It is printed on security paper with the national seal at the top, the fee near the bottom and two signatures — the head of the centre and the director general; one issued by an embassy carries the head of that consular centre's signature instead.

The certificate is available in French and in Arabic. We translate either, or a page that mixes both, at the same price. See our Arabic and French pages.

Late registration, names and old fees

Parents must register a birth within 45 days, with the hospital record and their marriage certificate. Later than that, a court judgment is needed first — the parent appears with two witnesses — and the judgment is then taken to the enrolment centre. If you hold that judgment, it is translated as well.

Names on a Mauritanian record follow the Arabic chain of given name and father's name, and the French transliteration does not always match the passport. The translation follows your passport, or the spelling you give us, consistently. Mauritania redenominated its currency in 2018, so an older certificate may show a much higher fee than a new one; that is not a sign of a problem, and the fee is translated as printed.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.
