New certificates and the old register extract

Sudanese birth certificates (شهادة ميلاد) are issued today by the civil registry of the Ministry of Interior (the Directorate General of Civil Rolls) on green watermarked paper. Older ones were issued by the Department of Statistics of the Ministry of Social Affairs as an official extract from the general birth register, on pink and blue paper, or white for the oldest. Both are in Arabic, and both are translated as the document they are. The registry does not issue certified copies: it issues a new certificate from the register, with a new date of issue. See our Arabic page.

People born in rural areas or before the 1970s were often registered years later or not at all. For a late registration a parent can swear an affidavit in court giving the date of birth, and someone never registered may hold an age estimate certificate from the Medical Commission instead. Each is translated in full; the translation does not turn an estimated age into a birth date.

Name chains, places and documents from abroad

A Sudanese name is a chain — given name, father's name, grandfather's name, sometimes more — and US forms cut it in different places. The translation keeps the chain in order and follows your passport's spelling. A birthplace recorded on an older Sudanese document may now be in South Sudan, independent since 2011; the place is translated as written on the document.

Many Sudanese applicants are refugees or asylum seekers, and since the war that began in April 2023 reaching a registry office in Sudan has been impossible for many. See asylum translations, and for visa cases what the NVC asks for.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My certificate is the old pink-and-blue extract.

That is the earlier Department of Statistics document. We translate it as issued.

I only have an age estimate certificate.

It is issued by the Medical Commission for people never registered. We translate it in full, without converting the estimate into a birth date.

My names are in a different order on my passport.

We keep the chain in the order of the document and follow the passport spelling throughout.
