Issued by the municipality, often years later

An Eritrean birth certificate is issued by the public registration office of the municipality where the birth was registered — in Asmara, the Office of Civil Status of the Municipality of Asmara. Many people were never registered at birth; a first certificate is then issued on the strength of hospital records, a baptismal certificate and witness statements notarized by the zonal court. Eritrean missions abroad do not print certificates themselves: a request made through an embassy, or through a relative with a power of attorney, goes to the office in Eritrea. Certificates are A4 computer printouts with stamps, a signature and reference numbers, and they are not issued as certified copies — a new one is printed.

For many Eritreans in an asylum or refugee case, getting a document from Eritrea is not possible at all, and other evidence is used; what we translate is whatever you have.

Tigrinya, English and Arabic, and the father's name as surname

Birth certificates are issued in Tigrinya or in English. One in English needs no translation; one in Tigrinya, or with Tigrinya stamps and entries, does. Older national ID cards are hand-written in Tigrinya and Arabic, and we translate Arabic too. See our Tigrinya page.

An Eritrean name is the person's given name, the father's given name and often the grandfather's; there is no inherited family surname, so siblings share a "last name" that their father does not. US forms put the father's name in the surname field; the translation keeps the names in order and follows your passport's spelling, so the family relationship stays readable. A church baptismal certificate may be dated in the Ge'ez calendar; each such date is given as written with the Gregorian date in brackets.

What USCIS requires

Under 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3), a foreign-language document must be accompanied by a complete English translation and the translator's certification that it is accurate. Every seal, stamp and marginal note is part of the document, so every one is translated.

State agencies set their own rules — see government agencies — and what our certification states is on this page.

How it works

Upload a photo or a scan of your document, pick the language pair and check out online. You never have to mail originals: a legible copy is all we need.

A professional human translator, never machine translation, translates the document word for word and mirrors the layout of the original. Every certified translation ships with a signed Certificate of Translation Accuracy that meets the requirements of USCIS, courts and universities.

Your translation is delivered digitally, usually within 24 hours for documents of one to three pages, and same-day delivery is available. If anything needs adjusting, we revise it.

Certified vs. standard translation

A certified translation is a word-for-word translation accompanied by a signed statement attesting to its accuracy and completeness. It is what official bodies require: USCIS, courts, universities and government agencies. Certified translations are $24.95 per page, where a page is up to 250 words.

A standard translation is the same professional human translation without the certificate, for when you only need to understand the content or for internal or informal use. It is billed at the same $24.95 per page of up to 250 words.

Frequently asked questions

My birth certificate is already in English.

Eritrean certificates can be issued in English. If every part is, it does not need translating, and we will say so.

My father's name appears as my last name.

That is how Eritrean names work. The translation keeps the names in their original order.

Can I get a certificate from outside Eritrea?

Requests go through an Eritrean embassy or a relative with a power of attorney, and the office in Eritrea prints it. We translate it once you have it.
